AI Policy

J-NOSS AI Policy

The J-NOSS Editorial Board is committed to maintaining a high-quality, scholarly publication. As a result, we only accept manuscripts for review and potential publication that are the sole creations of their authors and not of AI tools. When J-NOSS readers read the articles we publish, they expect to read the voice, ideas, questions, arguments, recommendations, and conclusions of the authors, not of an AI tool.

Manuscripts found to have been generated by one or more AI tools, whether in whole or part, will not be accepted. This generation may include, but is not limited to, AI-powered summarizing for literature reviews, creation of study design and methodology, creation of citations or references that the authors have not personally located and analyzed, development of analysis and conclusions, significant wording, etc.

A couple of very limited exceptions to this policy are as follows:

  • Minor grammar/mechanical assistance
  • Assistance with initial data review and analysis (e.g., for large sets of qualitative data, such as transcripts, provided that the author(s) go back and confirm analysis and disclose this usage in both the methods section and in the disclosure statement–see below).

For any manuscript that utilizes AI tools that meet the above limited exceptions, we require authors to submit an AI usage disclosure statement that specifies what aspects of the manuscript included this usage and what specific tools were used. This disclosure statement will be made available to peer reviewers during the peer review process, and, if the article is accepted for publication, the disclosure statement will be published along with the article to provide full transparency to our journal readers. If AI usage is a part of the methodology of the study (e.g., to assist with initial data review), that will need to be disclosed in both the methods section and in the disclosure statement.

If you have questions about this policy, please contact the J-NOSS Editor, Meredith Sides.
